Silk & Water

The spider laid this thread at 3:42 a.m. By sunrise, forty-seven droplets had condensed along its length — each one a perfect lens, each one inverting the garden behind it. To shoot at 5:1 you stop down to f/8 and accept that the depth of field is measured in microns, not millimetres. You focus-stack eighteen frames. The world becomes a problem of patience.

The Compound Eye

Each facet you see here is a complete optical unit — corneal lens, crystalline cone, retinula cells stacked below. The blowfly has 4,000 of them. At 10:1 magnification the surface reads like an alien cathedral, vaulted and geometric, built for a visual field that wraps 270 degrees around a world we can barely imagine. The specimen was pinned and gold-coated for SEM, then re-photographed under visible light.

Lattice

Bismuth grows in staircase spirals because its oxide skin forms faster than the metal beneath. You get these iridescent geometric towers, each face a different thickness of oxide, each thickness a different wavelength of reflected light. The photographer grew this specimen in a crucible in her kitchen, let it solidify for six minutes, then spent two days stacking 52 frames at 4:1. The colour is real. Nothing was adjusted.

The Skin You Live In

The last room is always the most unsettling. You know this surface. You live in it. At 3:1 it becomes topography — valleys of pore openings, ridgelines of dead keratinocytes, a forest of vellus hair so fine it bends in the heat of the ring flash. The subject held their arm still for eleven minutes while the rail advanced 80 microns per frame. Forty-one frames. The ordinary world, made alien.
